The inspector general of police has warned that anyone trying to create trouble in the name of Victory Day celebrations will be dealt with firmly.
Talking to journalists in Dhaka on Tuesday, AKM Shahidul Hoque said, “We’ve taken every measure to ensure joyous Victory Day celebrations. We’ll do whatever is necessary for the sake of security.
The top police officer said permission from police was a must for any display of fireworks on that day.
“It (the instruction) is applicable to the entire country, including Dhaka city. Police will give permission after considering the specific situation in each area.”
Asked if police anticipated any acts of sabotage during a BNP rally slated for Wednesday, Hoque said, “We’ll remain alert so that no one can carry out any subversive acts.”
Responding to another question on measures to combat militantancy in the country, he said, “We’re trying to find clues to each incident and have succeeded in most of them.”
The police chief ruled out any presence of IS operatives in Bangladesh, a subject of much speculation in recent months. “But we are working to identify the home-grown militants. We’ll be able to resist them with people’s help,” he added.
